Aging_Swine - Aging, the metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases: study in the swine.

From 01-01-2005 to 31-12-2008

Description

The aim of this project is to study the interaction between age, ageing of the arterial wall and the heart, metabolic syndrome components, mechanisms of atherosclerosis and repair mechanisms in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. We have selected the swine model because of the unique variation and combination of metabolic syndrome components and progression of atherosclerosis. Moreover, we have observed in the swine, like in patients with the metabolic syndrome, impaired left ventricle function that is independent of coronary stenosis. We will now study the association of the gene expression in the adipose tissue, the arterial wall and the heart tissue with atherosclerosis and heart function. Gene expression is studied by micro-array and RT-PCR analysis. The heart function is assessed by echography and MRI.
