History

16th Century

Between 1520 and 1580, Leuven was the center of a world-class mathematical tradition. The impulse for this development came from the physician Reinier Gemma Frisius (1508-1555), who was the pivotal figure of a group of mathematicians who distinguished themselves in the history of the university of Leuven by their intellectual and social involvement. The main representatives of this tradition are Gerard Mercator, Johannes Stadius, Cornelius Gemma (Reinier's son) and the instrument maker Walter Arsenius. Other famous students include Andreas Vesalius, Rembert Dodoens or John Dee.

Johannes Stadius

Johannes Stadius was a 16th-century professor of mathematics at the University of Leuven. Using Copernicus' newly published heliocentric model of the solar system (1543), he computed ephemeris tables predicting the position of celestial bodies in the sky on any given day. His Ephemerides (1554) remained main reference until the work of Kepler seventy years later (1627).
