Bonatema -Ontologies - Development of an ontology-based biological knowledge system for the acquisition of prior knowledge for use in bioinformatics algorithms

From 01-01-2003 to 31-12-2006

Description

This project aims at the development of an ontology-based knowledge system containing biological information on yeast. Such a knowledge system would allow biologists and bioinformaticians to efficiently retrieve biological information on yeast and, most importantly, to use this knowledge in the analysis of microarray data. The knowledge system will contain a compilation of all available information on yeast together with gene expression data from relevant microarray experiments. Additionally, algorithms/tools and the new information (analysis results) they generate, will be integrated in the system. The project aims at the creation of a biological knowledge system containing domain knowledge on yeast. Through the use of an ontology, the knowledge is stored explicitly en reusable in an ontology. More specific aims are the development of methodologies for : · the construction and adjustment of biological ontologies · the interoperability of prior knowledge and algorithms for data analysis · the comparison of biological information and analysis results
