DISH - Devices for food Intake using Smart devices in Healthcare (DISH)

From 01-10-2014 to 30-09-2016

Description

In this project, technology will be utilized to tackle a difficult problem in elderly: malnutrition. Prevention of malnutrition can

be obtained by carefully monitoring food intake of an older person living alone at home. Autonomous food intake is crucial

for the self-empowerment of the elderly and for his active role in society. Food recall in the form of questionnaires is often

used. However these questionnaires are prone to incompleteness and pose a time-consuming effort on the nurse. The

aim of the project consists of using sensors in cutlery or wearables to detect eating and drinking events. These sensors

are combined in a sensor network. Compared to existing applications, the multimodal fusion of different sensor data (both

environmental and on-body) is a step forward in order to increase accuracy and reduce false negatives. At the end we

want to demonstrate this into a proof of concept where we can show the added value to companies and healthcare

organizations.
