STLS - Non-linear Lp approximation problems : analysis, algorithms and applications

From 01-01-2002 to 31-12-2005

Description

The project concerns extensions of linear L2 approximation problems for solving overdetermined systems AX b : - linear Lp approximation problems (LLPA) : linear L2 approximation solve the overdetermined set of equations by minimizing a quadratic cost fucntion of the correction vector, while the resulting correction matrix makes the set of equations consistent again. This yields maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters if one assumes that the noise of the measured data is independently identically distributed Gaussian noise. - Nonlinear Lp approximation problems : when linear models no longer yield satisfactory solutions or when the underlying physical process describes it, nonlinear models are more appropriate. The first step when going from linear to nonlinear models are models that are nonlinear in the data but still linear in the parameters.
