Born in 1963 in
Antwerp,
Belgium,
my secondary school time was spent in the
Koninklijk Atheneum Berchem.
In 1985 I got a Licentiate degree in biology at the
University of Antwerp
with a comparative study of two lizard populations of
Lacerta vivipara;
my interests lay mainly in population ecology.
In 1986/1987 I performed my military service as tank commander in the
14th Artillery battalion
in Spich near
Cologne
(Germany) on the
Gepard 35mm AA platform (which was decommisioned in 1994).
In 1989, again at the University of Antwerp, I got a special Licentiate degree
in informatics and industrial mathematics (a two years course),
with a thesis project at the
Agfa Gevaert
chemical research and development
laboratory on digitising hardcopy chemical spectra.

From January 1990 I am employed at the
University of Leuven
in the
faculty of engineering science
(electrical engineering).
From 1990 until 1993 I worked as a software support engineer in the LUCI software group that mainly
served imaging research. I managed the image research library
LUCI
- written in 'C' - and was involved in all phases of that library's development.
In 1993 the LUCI group was disbanded; I moved to the
speech group
where my main work was managing and writing software, again mainly in 'C'.
At the end of June 1996 the speech group was forced to shrink.
So from July 1996 to April 1997 I was with the
micas group,
where, in the Design Methodology sub-group,
I developed software for analog design tools.
More specifically I took part in the analysis, design and implementation
of ProCon, the new version of Donald, which is implemented in C++.
For the analysis and design the Paradigm+ environment of Platinum was used,
with the paradigm Fusion.
From April 1997 I am with the
system group of the department.
My work consists of
general UNIX system managers duty
(www.adminspotting.org),
more specifically I am responsible for our Internet interface
(WWW site,
FTP server,
e-mail server,
DNS, ...) and for our system group programming tools.
Maintainer of a number of our freeware packages, a.o.:
analog,
PHP,
MySQL,
OpenSSH,
OpenSSL,
alpine.
