What is RSS?
RSS (‘Really Simple Syndication’) is a technique that allows to automatically gather news messages from your favourite sites (if they support RSS). This way you can easily keep up-to-date with with the latest news without constantly surfing the web to see if a site is updated since the last time you visited it.
And if you no longer want to follow the messages from a particular website you just remove it from your list of RSS feeds.
How do I use RSS?
To receive messages via RSS you need an RSS reader. There are hundreds of RSS readers available and probably you have one installed on your computer. If not you can also use one of the numerous online RSS readers. Here we list some of the possibilities:
- Webbrowsers and email programs:
- Firefox: websites that support RSS show in the bottom-right corner of you browser an RSS icon. By clicking this icon and registering for the RSS feed you get a bookmark that at all times contains the current news messages of the website, without having to visit the website.
- Thunderbird: in Thunderbird you can receive news messages via RSS as if they were email messages, without having to provide your email address and without risking SPAM. Detailed istructions can be found on this Thunderbird RSS page.
- Internet Explorer: starting from version 7 this ‘browser’ also supports RSS feeds, in a similar way to Firefox. For older versions you need to use a plug-in as TinyRSS. Online RSS readers (see further) are probably a better alternative.
- Outlook - Outlook Express: these ‘email programs’ allow you to read RSS feeds via special plug-ins like RSS Popper. Online RSS readers (see further) are probably a better alternative.
