During the weekend of May 16-17-18, 2008 the IEEE Benelux Sailing Weekend is held in Wolphaartsdijk, Zeeland. You don't have to be a IEEE member to participate.

Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October, there is an IEEE Gold and Professional Activities weekend in Leuven. There are various workshops and lectures about project management, entrepreneurship and career development. In addition there are social activities like a beer course and an interactive GPS city game. More details and registrations can be found through the weekend website.

Since last year also Graduate Student Members (GSM) can cast their vote in the IEEE President election. You are a GSM if you are a student member and already have a diploma (bachelor is sufficient), most of our members are GSM. Cast your vote before November 1st and fill out our poll!

Congratulations to Wilm and Jan for successfuly defending their papers in the IEEE Region 8 Student Paper Contest in Warsaw. Wilm Decré received the first place for his paper and Jan Verveckken the third place! A magnificent accomplishment.

Already for the third year in a row a paper from Leuven is selected for the finalists of the IEEE Region 8 Student Paper Contest. This year even both our submitted papers survived the selection process. Congratulations to Wilm and Jan and good luck for the defense in Warsaw, Poland!

Friday March 9 we are visiting Sidmar in Ghent during the afternoon. We will get a tour in the hot rolling mill and an explanation about the models and contol systems that are used in it. Afterwards we are eating spare-ribs in Ghent a we will go for a beer so that we are avoiding traffic jams on the way back to Leuven.

The second semester just started, so here we are with the traditional company presentations! Are you interested in knowing how it is to work as a consultant? Altran, a consultancy company active in high-tech engineering, IT and strategy, will present itself on Tuesday 6/3 from 12h45 till 14h on ESAT in Auditorium A. On Friday February 16, 2007 there is in cooperation with the LEOS Benelux Student Chapter a company visit to BEST nv (Belgian Electronic Sorting Technology).

Since January 1st, 2007 you can download every paper that is available on IEEE Xplore from a K.U.Leuven or Kotnet computer. Old papers, new papers, journal papers, conference papers, good papers, bad papers (ESAT papers, non-ESAT papers): from now on you can download them all on IEEE Xplore. IEEE standards (WiFi, Firewire,...) are also available.

On Wednesday February 14th, AnSem organizes an open door day. Not only the different carreer opportunities that AnSem has to offer will be discussed, but also the possibilities to do an internship or thesis there. The full program can be found on the registration form (.doc). Registration forms have to be submitted to AnSem before February 12th.

The new IEEE Fellows for 2007 were announced and again ESAT is present. Congratulations to Prof. Marc Moonen who was ‘elevated’ to IEEE Fellow for his contribution to adaptive filtering algorithms for digital communications and audio signal processing.

Do you want to learn or refresh some C++ knowledge? Participate in the C++ Marathon of Stefaan De Roeck! During this hands-on C++ course several aspects of this popular programming language will be highlighted. Only some basic knowledge about objectoriented programming is required.

Because of the new Graduate Student Member grade, students that alrady have a diploma get more rights within IEEE. The right to vote for example!

BEST Leuven organizes a course on Biomedical Engineering this summer. Interested IEEE members can take the classes for free.

During the weekend of September 1 until 3, the IEEE Region 8 Student Branch Conference takes place in Paris. We will be present to represent Student Branch Leuven and to exchange ideas with our colleages from other student branches. You can mail your remarks, ideas and requests to us so we can present them to the responsibles of the region.

On Tuesday May 9 there is the second edition of the ESAT and CS soccer tournament. Registration for teams is now opened.

As a continuation of the wine tasting course last year, we turn in a somewhat stronger direction. On April 20 we are visiting the one and only jenever museum in Hasselt and on May 4 there will be a whisky tasting at ESAT. Everybody is welcome after registration.

On March 29, Easics gives a seminar where they will introduce themselves and will discuss one of their activities. Everybody is welcome, starting from 20h00 in auditorium A.

During the weekend of March 24-25-26, the Student Branches of the Benelux organize a sailing weekend in Friesland. Everybody can join, IEEE members receive an extra discount! The deadline for registration is March 15.

On February 22nd, AnSem gives a seminar on the subject: ‘90nm CMOS - A new era for analog design?!’. Afterwards there is a reception with sandwiches where you can get to know the people of AnSem better. Everybody is welcome!

Prof. Van Dommelen will retire at the end of the academic year and therefore he will also stop his activities as the Student Branch Counselor. The IEEE Student Branch gratefully thanks Prof. Van Dommelen for his help during the past years. Further we can announce with some pride that Prof. Vandewalle will take the task of Student Branch Counselor upon him.

On Tuesday December 6 the IEEE Poker Tournament is organized. The nessecary initiation to the game will be provided. Also other card games can be played.

Unfortunately we have to close the registration for the company visit to the VRT. The maximum number of participants has been reached. The list of the lucky ones can be found online. For the others we are still trying to find an alternative.
