Opening activity: Water Bottle Rocket
IEEE Student Branch Leuven in cooperation with Euroavia organizes a Water bottle rocket competition as their opening activity, initiating the lift off of a new year and celebration of IEEE Day. Competition rules can be found below.
IEEE and Euroavia invite you on October 12th from 12:00 till 18:00 for this event at the grass field in front of ESAT. At 17pm Ice-lolly rockets will be handed out to the audience. At 19:30, Two speakers will talk about interstellar space flight and commercial space flight. The night will close with a free reception for all attendees of the opening lecture.
Three ways to win the competition:
- Precision: fire the rocket as short as possible to the target. This target is at ... meters from the launching platform.
- Duration: keep your rocket as long as possible up in the air
- Creativity: the team that is considered the most original by the competitors, wins the originality prize.
It is possible to win the three competitions simultaneously, so show some ambition! Each team has 3 chances. The organisation will provide a launching platform, water, pressurized air and a measuring cup. Here are the rules:
Competition Rules
- The bottles to be used are 2 litre PET Bottles, or smaller ones that have the same screw. They may be combined into a multistage system, but there is only one screw connection with the launch platform.
- Pressure is maximally 3 bar, lower pressure is also allowed. For safety reasons, a pressure test will be performed.
- The weight of the entire rocket, without fuel, is limited to 500g
- The minimal launching angle is 20 degrees.
- The rocket fuel consist out of an air-fuel mixtures no additives are allowed. You may choose the air-water ratio
- Multi-stage designs, radio-frequency controll, etc. is allowed.
- The organization is allowed to refuse participation, for reasons of safety.
- Exploding rockets are disqualified
- Rockets that go out of the playing field are disqualified
- You need to deliver the water rocket back, otherwise you are disqualified.
