On Wednesday November 8, 2006 from 13h30 until 17h00 the IEEE Student Branch Leuven organizes its yearly openingactivity on the grassfield of the Arenberg castle and the parking lot next to ESAT This year this will be an egg drop contest where you have to make sure a raw egg can survive a drop from 10m with your construction... Next to various other prizes, no less than three Playstation2 consoles can be won! Participating in the egg drop contest is free.

Gladiator

As a little extra there will also be a gladiator attraction on the grassfield to ‘knok down your colleague’. You won't be hungry or thirsty because there will be fresh baked pancakes and drinks at cheap prizes!

Mission: Design your own construction that protects a raw chicken egg from breaking when falling from 10 meter to the asphalt ground of the parking lot. You can find some inspiration besed on the constructions on this page.

Main prizes are awarded in three categories:

Broken egg

If in the 2nd or 3rd categorie there is a tie between (two or more) contestants, the winner will be decided by making an extra drop. If not all the contestants involved are present at that time, the winner is decided by lottery.

The winners will be announced during the evening activity at 20h in auditorium A of ESAT. The prizes will then be immediately distributed, if you are not there the prize will go to the next in the ranking!

Game rules

Drop location
  1. The raw unboiled chicken egg must arrive undamaged. An egg is ‘damaged’ when the shell is visibly broken. When this is the case, the contestant is disqualified from all three categories.
  2. The construction that is used has to fall together with the egg. A construction on the ground (a container/box or something similar) is not allowed.
  3. Participation is free and possible as an individual or as a team. A team must appoint a representative known to the organization before making the drop.
  4. Every participant can make up to three attempts.
  5. The chicken eggs will be provided for by the organization (to prevent that the chicken is still around the egg). We use regular eggs produced by chicken with an average hormone level, about 60gr - 80gr for an egg.
  6. The egg must be easy to insert/attach to the constructed device, and it must be detached afterwards as easy. In all cases, an easy visual inspection of the egg must be possible, otherwise the attempt is invalid. If the egg breaks when removing it for visual inspection, the attempt will be considered as failed.
  7. For building your device, no dangerous materials (explosives, chemicals...) may be used nor any materials that can harm people or objects by usage.
  8. The organization can cancel an attempt if it is believed that this can pose danger to persons or properties.
  9. The device must be easily put in the lift ramp. When the device endangers the operation of the lift ramp due to overweight or oversize, the attempt is canceled.
  10. The device must "operate" autonomously (e.g. no remote controlling, no wires...). Once the device is dropped, there must be no kind of influence from the participant nor someone or something on the ground.
  11. A contestant can only win one of the three grand prices.
  12. The organization reserves the right to prohibit a device and/or participant from participating in the contest, without prior notice nor explanation.
  13. The organization and jury have the final saying in all matters. They will however try to make the contest as fair as possible.
  14. The organization is not responsible for any damages, theft or accidents. Damages caused will be bore by the contestant.
  15. By participating, the contestants agree to all stipulated terms and regulations.
