On Thursday March 24, 2005 the IEEE Student Branch Leuven organizes a seminar where FMTC
(www.fmtc.be), or Flanders' Mechatronics Technology Centre,
will give a presentation on their current research.
This seminar is held in the ESAT building (auditorium A) and is starting at
19h30. After the presentations there is a possibility for further discussion at a small
reception.
This seminar is free, you don't have to register.
The next two speakers will be present:
- FMTC: stronger by doing joint research by Marc Engels
Flanders' Mechatronics Technology Centre is a joint research centre with a mission to build a bridge between scientific and industrial knowledge in the area of mechatronics. A mechatronic approach to product design brings mechanics, electronics and software together in an optimal way in order to make products more modular, intelligent and performant. FMTC was founded in 2003 by AGORIA, the federation of the technological industry, and important Flemish mechatronics companies. The success of FMTC is the innovative application of research results in the products of its members. As a consequence, the members of FMTC can increase the competative strength of their products in the world market. To achieve its goal, FMTC conducts middle and long term research in the following domains:- machine diagnosis
- modular machines
- high dynamic machines
- Open Robot Control Software by Bob Koninckx
Our current consumption society is characterized by smaller lotsizes and shorter economic life of products. The most important consequence for the designer of production machines is marketing new, customer specific machines at an increasing rate. To do this, an open control system is an absolute neseccity.
Bob Koninckx explains why none of countless initiatives from the past for more openness din't succeed. He'll motivate how an ‘open source’ approach can fill in the shortcommings of other systems. This thesis will be illustrated with the OROCOS project (Open Robot Control Software) that has the ambition to become the reference in open machine control. It has, under impulse of FMTC, made an important step towards the Flemish machine builders.
