BioSCENTer en KU Leuven doen mee aan iGEM 2013!
Na succesvolle deelname van KU Leuven-studenten aan de iGEM-competitie voor synthetische biologie in 2008, 2009 en 2011, heeft BioSCENTer opnieuw plannen gesmeed voor deelname aan de prestigieuze wedstrijd in 2013. Met de jaren is de reputatie van deze internationale wedstrijd alleen maar gegroeid. De lat is weerom hoger te komen liggen. Maar we wagen het er weer op!
Een team van een 12-tal studenten van de faculteiten Wetenschappen, Geneeskunde, Ingenieurswetenschappen en Bio-ingenieurswetenschappen zal onder begeleiding van professoren en postdocs de koppen bij elkaar steken en een nieuwe genetisch geëngineerde bio-machine ontwerpen, modelleren en uiteindelijk ook bouwen. Wordt het een nieuwe Dr. Coli of verbeterde ijsbacterie, een intelligente bacterie-chip of levende zonnecellen?
De creatiefste, slimste, meest gemotiveerde, ondernemendste, best communicerende, kortom de knapste studenten worden in de komende maanden geselecteerd (najaar 2012) om deel uit te maken van het team. Voorjaar 2013 is het tijd voor brainstorm & pizza-meetings waarop de bio-machine vorm wordt gegeven. In de zomervakantie van 2013 wordt alles in elkaar gestoken en getest. De grote internationale test zal de presentatie zijn van de bio-machine in Amsterdam en, ultiem, aan het Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston in najaar 2013. Daar gaan we voor!
Het initiatief voor deelname aan iGEM 2013 wordt op gang geschoten door onze iGEM-studenten van de vorige edities met 2 infosessies:
- Woensdag 24 oktober 2012 om 19:00 in het Jozef Heuts Auditorium in het Landbouwinstituut (00.215).
- Donderdag 25 oktober 2012, 19:00 op campus Gasthuisberg, Onderwijs en Navorsing II – auditorium BMW3 (04.216).
Beide infosessies worden afgesloten met een drankje en de mogelijkheid tot nakaarten met de 2011 deelnemers en de coordinatoren/advisors voor 2013.

BioSCENTer and KU Leuven join iGEM 2013!
iGEM, the international Genetically Engineered Machine competition, is currently the most prestigious synthetic biology competition worldwide for and by students. Previously, KU Leuven students took part with great success, bringing home some gold medals over the years!
After these great experiences in 2008, 2009 and 2011, BioSCENTer and KU Leuven again prepared to participate in the 2013 competition. iGEM’s fame has grown and teams come from all over the world. The competition is hard, but we look forward to another challenge. Will you join us?!
We aim for a team of approximately 12 students from the faculties of Science, Medicine, Engineering and Bio-engineering to design, develop and build a novel, genetically engineered bio-machine. To do this, we can use the bio brick directory, readily available from iGEM headquarters or make our own, novel bricks… Our team will be supported by some eager professors, post-docs and PhD students. Shall we make Dr. coli 2.0; improve our ice bacterium, make an intelligent bacterial chip or bring engineered cells alive with solar energy?
We’ll brainstorm during our famous pizza-meetings in the spring period to design our machine and use the summer months in 2013 to put it all together. The ultimate tests are the presentation of the bio-machines at the European jamboree in October 2013 and, hopefully, in November 2013 at the World Championship in Boston (at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

- October 24th 19:00 in the Jozef Heuts Auditorium (LAND 00.215) on campus Arenberg.
- October 25th 19:00 in Auditorium BMW3 (04.216) on campus Gasthuisberg, Research and Development II (Onderwijs en Navorsing II).
We’ll have students and advisors from iGEM 2011 giving an inspiring presentation. The 2013 coordinators and some advisors will be there too.

Benelux-biobricks naar iGEM-finale
De RU Groningen en de K.U.Leuven hebben de eindronde gehaald van iGEM 2011, het wereldkampioenschap synthetische biologie voor studenten. Met respectievelijk een tel- en een vriesbacterie bleven ze tijdens de Europese voorronde, afgelopen weekend in Amsterdam, het grootste deel van de concurrentie voor.
